Positive Youth Development

Surf Therapy is an after school care programme that fuses the rush of surfing with mind-body therapy for children and young people who are at risk and vulnerable.

The Jbay Surf Alliance Academy offers a safe environment where the kids learn to develop meaningful social connections, experience time away from difficult situations and adopt healthy behaviours to cope with stress. They foster self-esteem, trust and a sense of self within ever changing environments. They learn how important their environment is and that protecting it is key to their own healthy future.

They are empowered to care and self-regulate. These youths become protectors of each other and their Ocean and this ripples through their schools and home life. They grow within the programme learning to lead and to use their voice to speak up for positive change, clean water and a healthy ocean which connect us all.

At the JBay Surf Alliance, we are committed to making a positive impact on our environment. One of the pressing issues we are addressing head-on is plastic pollution.

We believe in the power of collaboration and are actively engaging with local authorities and retailers to promote plastic rehabilitation, encourage the sale of sustainable bags, and raise awareness about the harmful effects of single-use plastics in the retail industry.

But our efforts don’t stop there. We understand the significance of stormwater drains that run out onto our pristine beaches. During major storms, these drains can discharge an alarming amount of plastic waste, up to 100 cubic meters, directly into the ocean. That’s why we have embarked on crucial projects to install infrastructure that effectively filters out plastic debris. Our innovative solution involves redirecting the filtered water through wetlands, ensuring that only pure stormwater flows into the ocean.

By taking these proactive measures, we aim to combat plastic pollution and protect our beloved coastal ecosystems. Join us in our mission to create a cleaner ocean and a more sustainable future. Together, we can make a difference and inspire positive change for generations to come.

Reserves to sustain Ocean Life

Diving into Action: Safeguarding Marine Life through Innovative Marine Protection Areas

At the JBay Surf Alliance, we are fully committed to protecting our precious marine ecosystems. In line with the international mandate of 30 by 30, which aims to save 30% of the planet by 2030, we have embarked on a groundbreaking initiative – the creation of temporary rock reserves, or nurseries, known as Marine Protection Areas.

Imagine a stretch of beach transformed into a NO TAKE ZONE, where all living creatures are given a respite from human interference for a designated period of time. We call it 2 FOR 2 – 200km for 2 years. To make this vision a reality, we have placed prominent signs, implemented stringent security measures, and enlisted the expertise of dedicated scientists and professionals to monitor these areas closely. Our primary goal is to collect valuable data that can be shared with the world, contributing to a greater understanding of marine conservation.

But our ambitions go beyond just protection. We believe in the power of education and empowerment. That’s why we aim to transform those who abuse their fishing licenses into gainfully employed beach stewards. By providing training and employment opportunities, we promote true sustainability and job creation. Through their newfound roles, these individuals become passionate advocates for our coastlines, ensuring the harmonious coexistence of humans and marine life.

As each temporary closure reaches its rehabilitation phase, we joyfully release these areas back to the public and leapfrog along the coast. This continuous cycle allows us to establish a network of reserves and nurseries, educating communities along the way.

At the JBay Surf Alliance, we are dedicated to the conservation and preservation of our precious surf and coastal parks. In a groundbreaking effort, we embark on the journey of transforming these areas into vibrant ECO PARKS, fostering a harmonious coexistence between nature and the community.

Our journey begins with meaningful collaborations with local government authorities. Together, we define the scope of work, setting the stage for an inspiring partnership. With a shared vision, we initiate projects hand in hand, working towards a common goal. One step at a time, we bring in dedicated gardeners, secure sponsorships for paving, and meticulously craft parking facilities and footpaths. By creating well-structured recreational spaces, we enhance the overall experience for visitors.

Promoting environmental responsibility is at the core of our mission. We proudly secure sponsorships for recycling bins and contribute towards the creation of informative posters. These educational materials not only highlight the natural flora and fauna but also guide individuals on how to care for “YOUR” park. By fostering a sense of ownership and stewardship, we empower the community to actively participate in park preservation.

Our commitment goes beyond surface-level improvements. We diligently remove barbed wire, clearing out spaces that were once occupied by individuals seeking solace or engaging in illicit activities. With careful planning, we re-fence these areas, ensuring the safety and integrity of the park. As a testament to our efforts, we have established a protected Bird Park that has captured the hearts of bird lovers, garnering deep respect from the public.

These transformed parks have become popular and well-utilized hubs, leaving behind a legacy of cleanliness and order. The return of endemic flora and fauna is a testament to our systemic success. We are proud to partner with the Kouga Municipality in this noble endeavor, combining our strengths to conserve these natural treasures for generations to come.
